RuPaul's Drag Race star Cherry Valentine dies aged 28, heartbroken family confirm

RuPaul's Drag Race UK star Cherry Valentine has died aged 28, their agent has confirmed.

Real name George Ward, the performer, who appeared on the second series of the hit-BBC show, passed away on Sunday (September 18).

A tribute issued by his family this morning confirmed the tragic news.

They said: "It is with the most heart wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you that our George - Cherry Valentine - has tragically passed away.

"This will come as a profound shock to most people and we understand there is no easy way for this to be announced.

"As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same. We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched."

They added: "All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time. We love you Georgie. 30 November 1993 - 18 September 2022."

Fellow Drag Race star Cheryl Hole posted on Twitter: "I never thought I’d have to write something like this about such a talented and beautiful person that was Cherry.

"We have lost an incredible queen and I’m honestly devastated! RIP @TheCValentine I LOVE YOU."

George was raised in Darlington, County Durham as part of the Traveller community and qualified as a mental health nurse in 2015, before starting his career in drag.

They were also known for their hit-BBC documentary 'Cherry Valentine: Gypsy Queen and Proud'.

It tells the story of George's life at 18-years-old after coming out as gay in the gypsy community.

The programme's description reads: "At 18, George Ward left the Gypsy community. He felt rejected after coming out as gay.

"Leaving his Gypsy identity behind, he invented Cherry Valentine, a drag alter ego.

"Now, he wants to find out if he can be accepted as a queer Gypsy and feel proud."

George's career didn't just peak on Drag Race, he is also known to have appeared in music videos by world-famous artists such as Charli XCX.

Tributes have poured in all over social media this morning after the shocking news of George's death.

Good Morning Britain's Charlotte Hawkins said: "Very sad to hear that Cherry Valentine has died, aged just 28.

"We met back in June at Epsom - so full of life then, it’s hard to believe. Sending love to George’s family and friends, just heartbreaking."

One RuPaul's Drag Race UK fan account posted on Twitter: "We are utterly heartbroken to hear the shocking news that Cherry Valentine has died.

"As we try and process this news, our first thoughts are with their loved ones. Sending our love and condolences to their family and friends."

Another fan added: "Rest in peace Cherry Valentine, you were a light and an inspiration for so many people and your artistry and legacy will live on forever.

"You'll always be a legend, and every day we will celebrate you for your contributions to the world."
