Runway reopens at Manchester Airport after heavy snow causes chaos

Runway 1 at Manchester Airport has now been reopened after heavy snow caused chaos this morning.

Both runways at Ringway were temporarily closed to remove snow and slush. Several inbound and outbound flights were either cancelled or diverted.

In the latest update, an airport spokesperson said that a total of eight outbound planes had been cancelled. 17 inbound planes had been diverted.

Four inbound flights had been cancelled. At around 11.30am, the airport spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News that Runway 1 had been reopened.

Runway 2 is still closed for now. Pictures taken at the airport showed planes grounded to halt on the icy runways.

Gritters were pictured clearing the snow. Several people posted on Twitter to say they had been stuck on aircrafts for 'two hours' due to the closures.

Earlier, a Manchester Airport spokesperson said: "Due to heavy snow fall, we have temporary closed both runways. Health and safety will always be our top priority and operations will resume at the earliest opportunity."
