Four inbound flights had been cancelled. At around 11.30am, the airport spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News that Runway 1 had been reopened.
Runway 2 is still closed for now. Pictures taken at the airport showed planes grounded to halt on the icy runways.
Gritters were pictured clearing the snow. Several people posted on Twitter to say they had been stuck on aircrafts for 'two hours' due to the closures.
Earlier, a Manchester Airport spokesperson said: "Due to heavy snow fall, we have temporary closed both runways. Health and safety will always be our top priority and operations will resume at the earliest opportunity."
