Runners in final preparation ahead of return of popular Balfron 10k race

Runners are counting down the days to the return of Balfron’s popular 10k race next month.

After an enforced break of two years due to the Covid pandemic, the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k will be held in the west Stirlingshire village on Sunday, May 1 at 11am.

Organisers are expecting around 400 runners to be part of the event, which starts at Balfron Campus and heads out on scenic country roads before heading back into the village.

Once again, the event will have sustainability at its heart with organisers keen to continue their eco-friendly initiatives designed to turn Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k into Scotland’s greenest 10k.

Gone are the mountains of plastic bottles, metal medals, advertising flyers and carrier bags. Instead runners will be offered reuseable cups at water stations and refillable water bottles at the finish. There will also be wooden medals for all finishers.

The event, which sees Balfron residents and spectators cheering on runners along the route, will be supported by local businesses, Scottish Water and Decathlon.

With Covid precautions in mind runners will no longer be required to register for their race numbers on the day inside Balfron Campus, instead these have been posted out to entrants in advance.

Organisers are reminding runners and residents that the 10k route will be closed to traffic from 10.30am until 12.30pm on race day which means there will be no access to Fintry, via the B818 at Honeyholm, due to the ongoing repair works to Branshogle Bridge. Access to Fintry will still be possible via Arnprior.

A MBM Balfron 10k spokesman said: “We hope residents will be understanding and patient on race day as we once again endeavour to deliver a community event which has been much missed by our runners and supporters.’’

The race features an officially measured course, chip timing, winners’ prizes plus commemorative medal and buff. Although entries are now closed, more information can be found at www.balfron10k.org.uk
