Rumours behind the Peaky Blinders movie explained by creator

The BBC drama's sixth series draws to an end on Sunday, April 3.

As the gangster drama wraps up its sixth series, speculation is rife online as to what the future of the show will entail. After an explosive year full of death, trauma and violence, fans have been eager to unravel the end of Tommy Shelby.

Lead Cillian Murphy, who has been with the show for almost a decade, will be seeing things through to the end which means wrapping up all his loose ends. But that doesn't mean he won't be returning for a big screen follow up.

The show's creator said in 2018 there would indeed be a seventh season but has since appeared to backtrack on that statement. Screenwriter Steven Knight has said he is "keen" to continue the story of the Brummie ruffian and has already started writing the script in the form of a film adaption. He said: "I know exactly what's going to happen, I know what the story is and I'm writing at the moment."

Casting has been kept close to his chest and as of now, we have no idea who will be making an appearance. With the future of Cillian Murphy's character up in the air until the finale, Steven has noted that Tommy and his brother Arthur could still be involved.

He said: "There are so many people, so many great actors, that we are already, sort of, in conversation with for the film, and for whatever follows. But I think what we want to do is keep surprising people, and keep breaking new talent. Because it's all out there, and there is a sort of consistency – what we're doing is finding really good actors from a working-class sort of background, and telling that story. That's what we're trying to do."

The final episode is set to be an 80 minute special and an amalgamation of ten years of work and storytelling. There is no news as of yet when the film will drop or if a seventh series may still make an appearance, but Tommy Shelby's future is unlikely to be finished.
