Rugs have always played a pivotal role in interior design, but in 2025, they’re really taking center stage. Shaping a room's personality, warmth, and style, a great rug really can pull together an entire scheme.

So, if you're looking for the rug trends that will remain popular this year, we've got you covered. Here are the seven trends designers and rug experts are loving in 2025 – from vintage-inspired patterns to warm, earthy hues.

This year’s must-have rugs are all about personality and warmth. 'Colorful and playful is in. Go for the bold pattern, go for the strong colors, and go for something unique,' suggests India Holmes, creative director at Pelican House.

But that doesn't mean you have to go totally wild. Whether you're looking for a living room rug, kitchen rug, bedroom rug – or simply want some inspiration on the latest trends, we've done a deep dive into colors, materials, and aesthetics that are popular with interior designers right now and will suit every style. Let's get into it.

1. Layered neutrals

Decorating with neutrals will always remain popular in rug trends. Rugs are a big investment, so sticking to versatile colors feels like a timeless option that can be moved from room to room, home to home rather easily.

But that doesn't mean they have to be boring. From woven natural textures like jute and sisal to detailed patterns and prints, a neutral rug can make as much impact as something bright and bold.

'Layered neutrals are defining interiors in 2025, proving that warmth and texture can be just as impactful as bold color,' says Kristen Zeldin from Lulu and Georgia. 'By blending soft ivories, warm taupes, and organic patterns, this trend creates a rich, dimensional feel that’s both modern and timeless.'

'Rug trends for 2025 focus on texture, patterns, and sustainable materials,' adds Michelle Murphy of DEMI RYAN. 'High-pile and handwoven rugs in natural fibers like wool, jute, and hemp add warmth and depth to a space, while abstract and geometric designs make a bold statement.'

2. Go outdoors

Taking maximalism to new plains, in 2025 we're leaving behind some designers are leaving behind florals for a different kind of nature-inspired motif.

'Welcome to the jungle, says Charlotte Ford, senior marketing director at Ruggable. 'Nature-inspired maximalism calls forth lush botanical prints with fantastical, nature-inspired motifs. The more dramatic, the better. This trend creates an immersive environment that centers the beauty of the natural world through mossy greens, marbled blues, and patterns on patterns.'

And they're not the only ones that have bought into this trend. Kerri Besse, design director at Tumble coins this the "eclectic global" trend. 'Expect bold colors, intricate patterns, and craftsmanship that instantly add character,' she describes. 'It’s a trend that allows for a well-traveled, layered look without sacrificing comfort or warmth.'

The chicest way to take on this trend is to look for rugs in warm, grounded hues like olive green, rust, ochre, and deep browns that subtly weave in botanical prints, abstract motifs like bamboo, and animal-inspired patterns.

3. Updated Farmhouse

The modern farmhouse aesthetic continues to be popular in 2025 but has had a bit of a facelift. Moving beyond the overly distressed, rustic look; the updated farmhouse style is a little more refined.

'Updated Farmhouse is evolving with delicate floral motifs, subtle distressing, and small-scale patterns,' says Kerri from Tumble. 'These designs work beautifully with earthy neutrals and muted greens to add coziness without feeling cluttered. For those looking to make a bolder statement, moody earth tones or pops of mauve and violet bring a chic, modern edge.'

In designer Heidi Caillier's collaboration with Joon Loloi, we saw a return of florals in soft, warm tones mixed with vintage-inspired patterns. Muted blues, warm mauve-purples, and dusty rose tones are replacing the cooler greys of past farmhouse popularity, bringing a more inviting, cozy feel to spaces.

4. Tapestry-inspired

Another play on vintage style, tapestry-style rugs are the perfect way to introduce character and a sense of heritage into a space. They feel curated, collected, and rich in color.

Unlike minimalist rugs of past years, these designs lean into ornate patterns, layered textures, and painterly effects, offering depth and drama underfoot. Drew Micheal Fox, a.k.a Lone Fox, is a fan; designing the Hollyhock rug whose pattern has been lifted directly from the 17th-century Belgian tapestry hanging in his living room for his Lone Fox x Joon Loloi collection.

'Vintage and distressed rugs remain popular, but with modern twists, such as unexpected color combinations and oversized patterns,' Michelle explains. 'Additionally, eco-conscious choices like recycled materials and plant-based dyes continue to rise in popularity, blending style with sustainability.'

5. Old English pastels

Pastels tend to get a bad rep and can often feel a little saccharine underfoot, but this ye old iteration instead embraces muted, dusty shades that feel as though they’ve been gently faded over time for a vintage-inspired rug trend.

'2025 is all about warmth and nature,' Kerrie continues. 'We’re seeing warming neutrals and natural greens take center stage, creating calm, grounding spaces. Old English pastels are making a surprising comeback,' she adds. 'They soften a room in a way that feels both vintage and fresh, perfect for layering with more modern textures.'

'The era of minimalism and neutral shades such as white, grey, and beige seems to be reaching a turning point,' says Malin Glemme, Founder & Creative Director of LAYERED. 'For a harmonious look, try coordinating the rug’s color palette with other design elements, including artwork, cushions, or patterned wallpaper. Alternatively, you can create contrast by pairing a bold rug with understated furniture and allowing the rug to become the focal point of the room,' Malin suggests.

6. Industrial revival

While it sounds daunting, this rather unexpected trend focuses on striking a balance between raw, urban aesthetics and refined comfort, bringing a more curated, lived-in feel to industrial-style interiors.

'For 2025, we’re seeing the strong pull towards maximalist trends continue, particularly those that tell an interesting story and take inspiration from unexpected, outside-the-home sources,' Charlotte from Ruggable explains. 'This ranges from biophilic to industrial, cityscape-inspired designs.'

'Evolving from the design world’s fascination with the beauty found in decay and destruction, this trend combines the gritty origins of industrial design with subtle textures and refined color accents,' she continues. 'This combination creates a uniquely striking style, celebrating aged and weathered materials of the cityscapes around us.'

'Think large geometric prints, understated tones, and natural textures that create a serene yet modern feel,' adds Kerri from Tumble. 'These rugs are designed to bring balance and a sense of tranquility to any room.'

7. Two is better than one

Layering rugs is one of the easiest ways to add personality and warmth to a space. It’s a trick that instantly makes a room feel more considered and inviting, while also offering practical benefits like defining zones in open-plan spaces.

'Layered rugs give depth, dimension, and warmth to a room,' explains Danielle Balanis of Danielle Balanis Design. 'More is always more. It feels lived in, not so new, and perfectly put together. Rugs on top of rugs are the ultimate in cozy chic.'

A popular layering technique involves placing a larger neutral rug – such as a jute, sisal, or flatweave wool rug – as a base and adding a smaller, patterned, or textured rug on top, as they have done in the eclectic space by Pelican House seen above.

'Layering rugs, mixing different textures and sizes, create a cozy, collected-over-time aesthetic,' agrees Michelle.

Why do I need a rug?

Rugs help define areas within a room, making large spaces feel more intimate and smaller rooms feel cohesive. They also provide comfort underfoot, softening hard flooring and adding warmth, especially in colder months.

Beyond practicality, rugs contribute to the overall ambiance of a home, introducing texture, color, and pattern to elevate the design.

'Rugs are an easy and effective way to breathe life and warmth into any room,' explains Charlotte Ford, Senior Marketing Director, at Ruggable. 'Bringing color, depth, and character, the right rug can enhance or transform the aesthetic of any space with minimal effort from the consumer.'

'People are so busy with life, taking time to enjoy the simple things and making their home spaces as pleasant as possible can be a source of everyday joy and comfort.'

Where do I place a rug?

In living rooms, a rug should be large enough to sit under the front legs of sofas and chairs, creating a cohesive seating area. For bedrooms, placing a rug under the bed, extending out on either side, adds warmth and comfort when stepping out in the morning.

In dining areas, a rug should be big enough to accommodate chairs even when pulled out, ensuring both style and practicality. While kitchens will always benefit from a runner rug to add texture to a functional space. Whether in an entryway, hallway, or layered under a coffee table, strategic rug placement enhances both function and aesthetics, making a home feel thoughtfully designed and effortlessly inviting.

'In terms of rug placement, runner rugs have been having a moment since the start of 2025, with consumers realizing their versatility across different spaces,' Charlotte adds. 'But, as always, living room rugs are also thriving, providing warmth, life, and personality to the heart of the home.'

How do I choose a good rug for my home?

It can be tempting to be swayed by rug trends, but these can come and go, so when buying a rug for your home it's important to think about longevity and choose something you really love, especially if it's for your forever home.

What room the rug is intended for will have a big impact on the design you choose. For busy areas that receive high footfall like hallways and kitchens choose a durable rug like a flatweave made from wool or jute.

Alternatively, for bedrooms consider thicker rugs with a deep pile that will bring softness and warmth to the space.
