Grab a big ‘ol bucket of popcorn because Rugrats is officially getting its big screen live-action debut, much to the delight of hot rodent boyfriends across the globe.
That’s right, the cartoon foursome of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil and Lil — who first graced screens on Nickelodeon back in 1991 — will get their much-deserved time in the spotlight in the form of a movie adaptation, with a starry crew already attached to the project.
Jason Moore, who directed both the Pitch Perfect trilogy (!) and the Amy Poehler and Tina Fey-starring comedy Sisters, is on board to direct the Rugrats live-action remake. For his part, Saturday Night Live actor Mikey Day will pen the script alongside fellow screenwriter Streeter Seidell.
For those worried the adaptation might sway too far from Rugrats lore, don’t fret, because the co-creators of the original animation, Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó, are on board as producers.
According to reports, the movie will be set in the real world, with a fusion of live-action and CGI in the vein of that utterly terrifying and lifelike Sebastian in 2023’s Little Mermaid (nightmare fuel). While the Rugrats franchise has spawned three animated films, this will mark the lil gremlins’ first venture into live-action territory, and my mind is positively buzzing with casting picks.
It’s not yet known who of the franchise’s main characters — which includes the central foursome as well as their parents, Cynthia the doll and baby brother Dil Pickles — will appear in the upcoming remake, or who exactly will portray them. Has anyone checked the filming schedules of (rug)rat boyfriends like Kieran Culkin?
Jeremy Allen White sure has been quiet since this news dropped, and not a peep from Timothée Chalamet either. This cast is all speculative of course, especially because even though Timmy might look like one himself, the Rugrats are toddlers and I’m not about to be thirsting over that. I’m more of a rat guy than a frog guy, after all.
There’s no word yet on a release date for the Rugrats reboot, but best believe I’ll be first in line at the cinemas with a stack of contraband sweet treats hidden under my jacket.
I know we’re all suffering from sequel, reboot and live-action remake fatigue (ahem, Mean Girls), but this is one that I can really get behind. Well, this and Shrek 5, because I’m only human.
