The ticket designs for the Rugby World Cup, which will open on Sept. 20, were revealed Monday in Tokyo.

There are three types of tickets, each with a different background color: blue, red or purple. The illustrations on the tickets show rugby players in action in front of a gold byobu screen. The players are depicted in a musha-e samurai art style. The art represents the charms of rugby and Japanese culture in an original style, with tradition and innovation as the basic concept.

The total number of tickets is about 1.8 million. About 1.4 million had been sold by the end of May, and will be sent to ticket holders from late July. Purchasers were able to choose electronic tickets, yet more than 80 percent opted for paper tickets.

"You can feel the power of the players [in the ticket designs], and the gold color is brilliant," said Toshiaki Hirose, a former captain of Japan's national team.
