Super Rugby 'try of the century' leaves commentators and fans blown away

Queensland Reds have scored potentially the try of the season in Super Rugby.

The effort was produced in a game between Reds and Highlanders on Friday and was finished off by lock Jake Upfield after a truly chaotic passage of play.

The move started out with the Reds camped on their own five-metre line with ball in hand before number eight Harry Wilson burst through the defence with a galloping run that took him all the way into the opposition half. A sublime dummy bought him extra yards before a pass to Wallaby team mate James O'Connor on his left shoulder.

O'Connor seemed destined for touch after bumping off former Leicester Tigers man Freddie Burns but somehow, with quite remarkable athleticism, managed to keep his foot in the field of play before offloading back infield to keep the game alive.

Tate McDermott then scooped the ball up, shifting the ball out the back door to Josh Flook as he was tackled, who immediately spread it to Mac Grealy before the final flicked pass to Upfield that completed the spectacular score.

The commentary team were simply awe-struck, especially by O'Connor's incredible ingenuity to keep the game going.

Co-commentator Rikkie Swannell said: "Unbelievable touches. How does he stay in field there? See you later Freddie Burns! And stands on his toe which keeps him in field, and just keeps it alive! Look at this ball from Tate McDermott! What a breakout."

It is being acclaimed as the 'Super Rugby try of the season', with one fan on social media asking: "Um…did the Reds just score the Super Rugby try of the century?"

It wasn't enough to secure victory unfortunately, despite the Reds leading 30-28 until the dying moments. The Highlanders nicked it right at the death to give club legend and All Black icon Aaron Smith an appropriate send-off before the scrum-half joins up with Toyota Verblitz in Japan next year.
