Saturday's Super Rugby clash between the Chiefs and Moana Pasifika kicked off in remarkable style with the fastest try in the competition's history.
Chiefs centre Rameka Poihipi crossed the whitewash just nine seconds after referee Angus Gardner blew the whistle to start the contest.
Sky Sports commentator Grant Nisbett described the score as the “quickest try of all time.”
Chiefs and All Blacks star Damian McKenzie kicked the game off, sending a deep kick the way of Moana left winger Anzelo Tuitavuki, who collected the ball before seeing his infield pass intercepted by Poihipi, who had targeted the channel rather than the player. He proceeded to saunter over the line from 10 metres out.
The previous fastest Super Rugby try on record was 12 seconds, scored by former Fiji international Vula Maimuri, for the Highlanders in against the Crusaders at Carisbrook, Dunedin, in 2001.
The fastest try in Test Rugby history is reported to be Scotland's John Leslie against Wales in 1999 at 10 seconds after kick-off.
