Rugby legend Va'aiga Tuigamala 'Inga the Winger' dies aged 52 just weeks after sister killed in accident

Rugby legend Va'aiga Tuigamala - Inga the winger - has died aged 52.

The rugby league and union superstar played for Wigan, Samoa, New Zealand and Newcastle Falcons, a signing which saw him transfer for a world record £1million fee.

News of his death comes just a matter of weeks after his younger sister, pastor Helen Verry, died on January 30 after being seriously injured at a church in West Auckland. She was the youngest of 15 siblings. The reported workplace accident is being investigated.

Born in Samoa, Tuigamala played for the All Blacks on 19 occasions in union before later representing Samoa in league (twice) and union (23 caps).

A statement from Wigan Warriors said: "This morning, Wigan Warriors are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic news that former player Va’aiga (Inga) Tuigamala has passed away. Wigan Warriors send their deepest condolences to the family and friends at this awful time."

Former dual-code England star Jason Robinson said: "Absolutely heartbroken! I owe so much to this amazing man! Literally helped change my life when he came to ⁦@WiganWarriorsRL⁩ from NZ. Sending all my love and condolences to the family at such a sad time. RIP brother".

Ex-Samoa international Apollo Perelini said: "Saddest news to hear. We started primary school together and took our rugby journey to the UK. RiL my dearest brother Inga(the winger) Tuigamala".

After his sister's death, Tuigamala had thanked Verry for her "short, beautiful and full life", and said she had left an "incredible legacy" for everyone to follow.

"Love you always little sister, rest in God’s arms."
