Rugby evening headlines as Wales star's career still in balance and boss suffers pulmonary embolism

Here are the latest rugby headlines on Tuesday, May 3.

Amos fate unknown

Cardiff are still waiting on news over whether Hallam Amos has played his final match before retiring.

The Wales utility back is hanging up his boots this summer to pursue a career in medicine. However, having been stretchered off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury against Munster last week, it could be the case that the 27-year-old has played his final game.

Cardiff forwards coach Duane Goodfield confirmed as much on Tuesday, admitting that they are still waiting on scans for Amos and Welsh prop Dillon Lewis. Cardiff have three games remaining this season.

"Them boys are going through their reviews weekly. They've got further scans to go to determine how that looks for the end of the season. We'll know more towards the end of the week," Goodfield said.

"Dillon is looking more promising. We should know more on him by the end of today."

RFU boss in hospital

Rugby Football Union chief executive Bill Sweeney is recovering in hospital after suffering a pulmonary embolism, the governing body has confirmed.

Sweeney was admitted on Friday and the RFU said he is "expected to make a full recovery and return to work" following a period of recuperation.

Sweeney joined the RFU in 2019 after spending five years as chief executive of the British Olympic Association.

The RFU statement read: "Bill Sweeney, RFU CEO, was admitted to hospital on Friday and he is being treated for pulmonary embolism. Bill is expected to make a full recovery and return to work, he is in good spirits and is being well looked after.

"Bill will be recuperating for the next few weeks; initially in hospital but returning home soon. In the interim, the RFU executive team will ensure Union matters continue to be managed effectively working closely with Tom Ilube, RFU Chair, and the rest of board as needed.

"Bill would like to convey his strongest possible appreciation for the NHS who perform such incredible work."

Dragons 'must do better'

Dragons centre Adam Warren has admitted the Welsh region have to be better after the humbling defeat to Zebre on the weekend.

The Dragons became the first team to lose to the Italian strugglers this season as an ill-disciplined performance saw them go down 23-18.

Warren said: “It was a disappointing performance – nobody is hiding from that. The last few games we have built nicely, some parts of the last few games have been good, but we went away to a tough place like Zebre and couldn’t get our game on the park.

“We showed some fight to get ahead, but towards the end our discipline let us down. We had the lead and there was a chance to kick on, stick with our processes. But throughout the game our discipline wasn’t the best and then the two yellow cards added to it and then we are suddenly chasing the game. They had their tails up, had a few big ball carriers that got themselves in the game and it got tough to stop. We’ve got to learn and be better.”

Seven stars leave Glasgow

Scotland hooker Grant Stewart is among a number of players who will be departing Glasgow this summer.

Warriors announced that seven players would be leaving, although record appearance-holder Rob Harley and Wasps-bound Kiran McDonald were already confirmed to be exiting.

Second-row forward Hamish Bain is leaving, while centre Robbie Fergusson will end his third spell with the club.

Prop Tom Lambert is set to depart to pursue a playing opportunity overseas after an ankle injury sustained in October hampered his progress this season.

Tight-head prop Ewan McQuillin will depart after making two appearances this season.

Stewart played 47 times for Warriors and scored a try in the 2019 PRO14 final. He scored his ninth try for the club against Zebre last month.

Glasgow head coach Danny Wilson told the club's website: "Each player leaving has applied themselves, worked hard and been passionate about playing for Glasgow Warriors.

"We wish our leavers all the best and would like to thank them for what they have done as Warriors - their contributions both on and off the field cannot be underestimated.

"We're looking forward to finishing the season together and, when the time is right, celebrating all they have given to the jersey."
