Rug sweeps up €85,000 for homeless charity at Dublin charity auction

A rug has been sold for over €85,000 at a charity auction this weekend.

The colourful design, titled as "Fez", was designed by world-renowned abstract painter Sean Scully. It was sold by Whytes Auctioneers this Sunday and has an estimated net worth between €15,000-20,000.

The piece was one of a dozen stylish rugs that went under the hammer at the event. The twelve designs form together as a project known as “Island”, organised by family owned business Ceadogán Rugmakers.

Proceeds will be split evenly between housing charity Peter McVerry Trust and a regenerative wildlife project in Co. Wexford. The auction generated an impressive total of €150,000, which will be divided amongst the two charitable causes.

Other highlights from the sale include a 'glow in the dark rug', designed by artist Dorothy Cross. A separate piece, conceptualised by artist Alice Fitzgerald, racked up €9000.
