Ruben Amorim warns Manchester United fans over 'embarrassing' relegation battle

Ruben Amorim accepted a relegation battle is a possibility for Manchester United after Monday’s defeat to Newcastle.

The Red Devils lost their third consecutive home game for the first time since the 1962-63 season and sit 14th in the Premier League table before the trip to table toppers Liverpool on Sunday.

Alexander Isak and Joelinton scored the only goals of the game, though Eddie Howe’s side could well have added to their tally.

The Manchester giants have lost five of their last six and only Southampton, Wolves, Leicester and Ipswich have tasted more defeat on more occasions this season (9).

United are seven points above the relegation zone and while the idea of seeing one of the game’s powerhouses fighting to ensure top-flight survival would have been laughable only a few weeks ago, Amorim accepts it may be a possibility.

"Yes it’s embarrassing,” he said.

“It’s also my fault in this moment because I think the team know it’s not improved. It’s a little bit lost, in this moment. It’s embarrassing being Manchester United coach and losing a lot of games.”

Asked about the poor run of form since his appointment by Sky Sports, Amorim said: "You cannot go back. We've only had four training sessions all together. I will continue to do my idea until the end.

"That is really clear [United are being dragged into a relegation battle] so we have to fight. It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty.

"We have to fight in the next game."
