Ruben Amorim hit with new Manchester United injury in blow to new manager

Lisandro Martinez has withdrawn from the Argentina squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers with an apparent injury suffered in Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Leicester.

The defender went down during the game with a knock but was fit enough to complete the full 90 minutes. However, after reporting for international duty, he has now returned to his club for assessment.

It means he will miss the World Cup champions’ double-header with Paraguay and Peru, and new United manager Ruben Amorim will now be sweating on his availability for his first game in charge away at Ipswich on Sunday, November 24.

Amorim already has several injury concerns in his defence, with Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia all still recovering from their respective issues.

Malacia did make his long-awaited return on Tuesday night though, playing for United’s Under-21 side in an EFL Trophy tie with Huddersfield Town.

The Dutch left-back has missed the last 17 months with a knee injury, and has not played for the first team since May 2023.
