Ruben Amorim drops major hint on big tactical change at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has given a major hint as to which formation he is likely to use at Manchester United.

The 39-year-old Portuguese sets to work as the Red Devils’ new head coach on Monday, having beaten Braga 4-2 in his final game as Sporting Lisbon boss on Sunday.

Amorim’s arrival brings an end to the caretaker tenure of Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took charge of United for four games after last month’s sacking of Erik ten Hag as manager.

Amorim adopted a 3-4-3 system at Sporting, who he led to two Portuguese league titles, and he has now hinted at opting for the same formation at United.

His first match in charge will be an away trip to Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday, November 24, following the international break.

Speaking after his final game in Lisbon, Amorim said: “I know how I am going to play in the beginning, because you have to start with a structure that you know.

“Then you will adapt with the players that you have, some injuries, or no injuries, what kind of players have the abilities to defend, attack — I will discover that in the next few weeks.

“We don't have a lot of time to train, so I have to show something that I know very well. You can take whatever you want from that.”

During the international break, Amorim will work with a small number of first-team players at Carrington, with many due to travel away with their national teams.
