RTE viewers surprised as Hozier's Late Late interview takes a bizarre turn

Hozier fans were delighted to see the Wicklow singer-songwriter back on the Late Late Show sofa on RTE One last night but were surprised when the interview took a bizarre turn.

The show began much later than usual due to US President Joe Biden's visit to Mayo but host Ryan Tubridy still got the chance to speak to the Take Me To Church hitmaker about a number of things, including the political aspect of his songs.

The musician, whose real name is Andrew Hozier-Byrne, also performed his new song and viral TikTok hit 'Eat Your Young'.

One of their conversation topics that surprised the audience – and made for a very “funny and sweet” interview – was the two celebrities bonding over their love for Kermit the Frog.

Ryan confessed to Hozier that he channels Kermit a lot during the Late Late Toy Show, while Hozier teased him about being a fanboy.

The ‘Take Me To Church’ singer then told the audience about how Kermit was a surprise guest at an open air folk festival in Newport and sang 'Rainbow Connection'.

The celebrity went on to describe the absurdity of it and how despite it, he was moved by the song. Ryan then said: “These last few minutes have been a fever dream.”

Fans were quick to flock to Twitter and comment on the interview. One person wrote: “I didn’t expect to be watching Hozier on the Late Late chatting about his love for Kermit the Frog and how moving it was seeing him perform at a folk festival as a surprise guest…” Meanwhile, another one wrote: “My fave part of the Late Late Show was hearing about Kermit the frog.”

A third one said: “Lovely, sweet and funny interview. [frog emoji] Absolutely enjoyed the premiere of the new songs. The Eat Your Young version a bit more slow than the original but wonderful! Love the cello and violin here. All Things End [heart eye emoji] my favourite melody! What an atmosphere created here. Your voice is even more splendid…”

The Late Late Show is available to watch on the RTE Player.
