RTE viewers hail 'priceless' banter between Meath football manager Colm O'Rourke and Tommy Tiernan

RTE viewers were delighted to see Tommy Tiernan reunited for a chat with his former school teacher and current Meath football manager Colm O'Rourke on tonight's show.

In July 2022, O'Rourke was appointed manager for Meath's senior football team. He also enjoyed a highly successful football career, and he previously worked as a teacher and later principal at St Patrick's Classical School in Navan.

O'Rourke also previously taught Tommy Tiernan and fellow jokers Dylan Moran and Hector Ó hEochagáin while at the school. On tonight's show, the former Sunday Game analyst spoke about his personal life and coaching Meath.

When asked by Tommy Tiernan if he had many crises in his life, he said: "I've had a pretty boring life. I grew up in a big family, went to school, had no interest in school whatsoever.

"I was very single minded in I wanted to have success as a footballer and I think that maybe at the cost of a lot of other things." When asked about his competitiveness, O'Rourke said that wants to see others do well but admitted that he'd love to beat Dublin in the football.

He said: "I'm competitive, I want to see Meath winning or any team I'd be involved with. My competitiveness now in the last 20 years has been to see other people doing well."

"Obviously we measure ourselves with Dublin, you measure if you're good enough to play at Croke Park and not just beat them. That is something I'd like to see coming back," added O'Rourke.

Tommy Tiernan then shared a joke with his former Geography teacher about their school days, saying: "I wish one day when you where throwing me out of your class, I’d have said one day you will be on my chat show."

Social media users were quick to praise Colm O'Rourke for his playing and management career, as well as his banter with Tommy Tiernan. One Twitter user said: "Soo funny:@Tommedian to Colm O’Rourke ‘I wish one day when you where throwing me out of your class, I’d have said one day you will be on my chat show’#loveit #tommytiernanshow What a wonderful interview!

Another person said: "Could listen to Colm O'Rourke talk forever. 1 of the best players to ever play the game of Gaelic Football. What an eventful life he has lived, on & off the pitch. Hope Meath can make The Leinster Championship much more competitive this season."

A third added: "Colm O’Rourke and Tommy - priceless. The lorry driver stories are an under appreciated genre."

A fourth person said: "Amazing role model for young people Colm O'Rourke and an absolute Gentleman."
