RTE viewers fume over Liam Brady's Liverpool criticism ahead of Inter Milan clash

RTE pundit Liam Brady left some viewers fuming on Tuesday night with his criticism of Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk and the Reds' defensive tactics.

Irish fans tuned into their Champions League showdown with Inter Milan on RTE 2, with legendary pundit Brady joined by former Ireland ace Ray Houghton in studio.

And Brady's analysis of centre-half Van Dijk got fans talking as he claimed that his 'one weakness' was that he relied on the offside trap too heavily and that he can be 'casual'.

Fans took to social media to blast the pundit and defend Liverpool and Van Dijk.

One fan tweeted: "Constantly criticising Liverpool for “almost getting caught out” with their offside trap. A cursory glance @ stats tells you #LFC have 1 of the most effective offside traps in world football. It’s not luck."

Another added: "Not sure Liam Brady fully appreciates Klopp high line - it’s not a case of ‘relying on the linesman’. He relies on his players to squeeze the opposition, knowing that offsides will be caught by VAR."

"Liam Brady just said that if Virgil Van Dijk has a weakness it's "he can rely on the linesman to get him out of trouble....he sometimes looks to play offside"," one fan laughed.

"Liam Brady: If VVD has a weakness it’s that he plays offside. Christ, almighty," another added.

The Reds brought a 2-0 lead into the second leg of the Last 16 tie against the Italians, and boasted home advantage at Anfield with one eye on the quarter-finals.

Goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah gave them a comfortable San Siro win in the first leg last month as they made it seven wins in a row in Europe.

And they were well on their way to the last eight as they controlled affairs in the first-half, with the scoreline at 0-0 at time of publishing.
