RTE's Marty Whelan's heartbreak at the Eurovision semi-final results was evident through the microphone as many offered their sympathies on Thursday night.
Ireland's Brooke Scullion did not make it through the second semi-final despite a strong performance and Marty echoed the viewers at home's thoughts.
So much so that many took to social media to say they had never heard the legendary presenter so downbeat.
Col Patterson tweeted: "I could hear Marty Whelan's heart break into pieces,yet again. Ah well. Tough on Brooke."
Con Murphy tweeted: "Somebody needs to lift Marty Whelan off the floor. I've never heard him sound so disappointed and he's had plenty of practice in recent years. Really hard luck for Brooke.
One said: "I'm disappointed for Ireland (and poor Marty Whelan sounds devastated) and really surprised about San Marino."
Niall Farrell added: "Marty Whelan was right. Ireland deserved to qualify this year. We’ve sent some rubbish but she was brilliant. This isn’t RTE’s fault either. It’s a bigger problem. Guarantee if Brooke had been singing for Sweden or Azerbaijan this evening she’d be through."
Despite the result, Derry girl Brooke said she was happy with the performance and they "couldn't have done anymore."
On the night, Belgium, Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Australia, Sweden, Romania and Serbia all progressed to Saturday's grand final.
