RTE's Marty Morrissey opens up on final moments with tragic mother after arriving at crash scene

RTE broadcaster Marty Morrissey has emotionally told how he came upon the crash scene where his mother sadly died late last year.

Peggy, who was 94, died in a single vehicle crash in Co Clare during the height of Storm Barra.

Marty told Ryan Tubridy on the Late Late Show how he was supposed to meet his mother on the night of a storm as she had always been frightened by extreme weather events.

The sports commentator revealed his mum had only passed her driving test the week before the accident.

Marty said: "We agreed that I would go down, we'd stay together in the Old Ground(hotel) and I said I'd go and collect her but she said 'no, no I'll drive'.

"So we said we'd meet in Inagh about 10, 15 minutes from home, and when she wasn't there unfortunately, she was driving on a road that she drove three or four times a day and she missed a bend and unfortunately we lost her.

"I went back when she wasn't in Inagh and I kept driving and I came upon the accident and it was tough. I told her I loved her.

"The fire brigade were there, the ambulance, the gardai. I do want to say this, they did their best to save my mum but I knew what she wanted, I asked them to say a prayer with me, once we had mum taken out of the car, we stood around and said a prayer together.

"So I want to compliment and thank those frontline people who we forget how brave they are and how kind they are."

An emotional Marty admitted the "last couple of months have been difficult" but praised the people of Ireland for their support since the accident.

He added: "When you lose your mum, lost my dad in 2004, it has been quite difficult. I have learned of the last few months the kindness of people.

"The generosity of the people of Ireland, that overwhelmed me, every day since mom died I've been getting mass cards, sometimes close to 125 cards per day.

"It wasn't just the mass cards I got, it was the letters, I have read every letter, it was their stories of grief and tragedy that consoled me.

"I had my tears and my quiet moments.

"I just want to thank the people of Ireland."

Describing Peggy, Marty said: "She was 5'2 but she was a ball of fire.

"She was special.

"A great Irish mother, could not have asked for anymore from my mam."
