RTE's Kathryn Thomas opens up about being 'too scared' to run during pregnancy as she reaches milestone

Kathryn Thomas has told that she couldn't run during her pregnancy because she was too scared.

The Operation Transformation host, who is mum to three-year-old Ellie, welcomed her second daughter Grace, last October.

But the broadcaster and fitness enthusiast who remained active throughout her pregnancy, even launching her own tailored pregnancy ‘Bump Fit’ guide, revealed she reached a huge milestone this week by running her first 5k in a year.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday morning, the Co. Carlow native said: “I’m so bloody delighted. I’ve just done my first non stop 5k in more than 12 months.

“Ahh, I'm just so happy. I don’t give a s*** about the time, it was long.

"The last couple of weeks with Covid and everything, it has slowed me getting back to it.”

The TV presenter and business owner of Pure Results, an all-inclusive residential fitness and wellness retreat, admitted the run was a huge step in her own fitness journey, after struggling with the idea throughout her pregnancies.

The 43-year-old explained: “I wasn’t able to run on either of my pregnancies… like I trained all the way through doing resistance and all of that but I just couldn’t mentally get into the running space with bouncing and everything.

“I was just too scared,” she said.

“And it is perfectly safe to run if you are signed off by your doctor, my friend ran right up to 30 weeks and beyond.

“So I am just absolutely thrilled.”

The red faced star also encouraged her followers to follow suit, saying: “So for those of you who have fallen off the wagon or are worried or have yet to start do it.”

Kathryn has previously opened up about having miscarriages before welcoming her first child Ellie with her husband Pádraig McLoughlin in March 2018.

She has since been open about the anxiety she felt throughout her pregnancies after suffering such heartbreak in the past and ensured others it was okay to feel that way.

Kathryn explained: “It was important to say even though we got this far you still don’t get over the fear or your previous losses.”
