RTE's David McCullagh becomes international sensation as Russian Ambassador interview goes global

RTE broadcaster David McCullagh has gone viral in the days since his interview with the Russian Ambassador to Ireland.

The Six One News presenter spoke to Yury Filatov on Friday which marked the second day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

McCullagh was praised for the "outstanding" interview, which he concluded with the sign off: "Yury Filatov, Ambassador of Russia to Ireland, for the moment at least."

During the interview, the presenter sought to fact check many of the Russian Ambassador's claims, including asking "why our government entertain your presence here when you're acting as an apologist for slaughter?".

Mr Filatov responded: "It is a good question. You might ask your government. It's up to them. I can leave any time."

The grilling has since been picked up by international media, with one US chat show host devoting a segment to it this week.

John Oliver referenced the interview on HBO's Last Week Tonight on Sunday during a piece on Russia's war in Ukraine.

"Even Putin allies like Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban are coming out against it," Oliver said.

"You cannot make a case for what is happening, and if you even try, as Russia's ambassador to Ireland this week, you just sound ridiculous."

The key moment of McCullagh's interview was then featured, including his question regarding the ambassador being "an apologist for slaughter".

After the clip was played, Oliver said: "Wow, he just asked you why Ireland should allow you to stay as an apologist for slaughter and you said 'good question'.

"That really didn't seem like a 'gotcha' question, but somehow, you just got got.

"That's actually a pretty good reminder that Ireland, in addition to being known for eye-shatteringly beautiful meadows and free-flowing sheep, is also known for taking zero shit from occupying armies.

"Believe me."

The RTE clip of the interview has been viewed more than 6 million times, with McCullagh's probing hailed as journalism at its finest.
