RTE's Charlie Bird issues update after kind message from Damien Dempsey and says "more big names to come"

Charlie Bird took to Twitter this afternoon to share a message from Irish singer Damien Dempsey as the Climb with Charlie date approaches.

Many well-known Irish names have been voicing their support for the climb in aid of Pieta House and the Irish Motor Neurone’s Association.

Bird revealed that Imelda May, Derek Ryan and Damien Dempsey will be joining and says there are “more big names to come.”

He wrote: “The amount of support that climbwithcharlie.ie is getting is amazing.

“Daniel O Donnell,Matt Molloy and today we have this lovely message from Damien Dempsey.

“In the days ahead Imelda May and Derek Ryan will also be joining us. And yes there are more big names to come. Take Care.”

In the video posted alongside Charlie’s tweet, Damien Dempsey said he will be taking part in support of Charlie on April 2, 2022.

“This is Damien Dempsey here and I want to show my support and solidarity for warrior Charlie Bird,” he said.

“Charlie is on a mission at the moment to climb a mountain in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Pieta.

“Two charities that do incredible work, amazing work, and I think they really need our help.

“So, what the bold Charlie is doing for the nation is an inspiration and so on the 2nd of April, I’ll be climbing the mountain myself near me, probably Howth in support and solidarity with Charlie.

“So, if you want to support or donate or help, please go to climbwithcharlie.ie.”

The retired RTE reporter recently said that some days are difficult, however one kind gesture from three young kids recently “made his day.

Last Sunday he uploaded an image of two letters sent to him alongside donations from three children aged 6 to 10 - out of their Christmas money.

He posted their homemade cards online and said it had made him “the happiest person you could imagine.

"What can I say...Hannah age 6, Aoibheann Age 8 and Seamus aged 10,” he began.

“This kind and amazing gesture has made me the happiest person you can imagine.

“You have made a tough day into one with sunshine and love. You have really extended the hand of friendship. Tiger says thanks too."
