RTE Room to Improve viewers blast 'lockdown DIY job gone wrong' kitchen

RTE's hit show Room to Improve returned to viewers screens on Sunday night, but it was one element that got everyone talking.

The show, which follows architect Dermot Bannon as he works with families across the country to build their dream homes, has been much anticipated by home design lovers and enthusiasts.

This episode followed Dermot as he worked with couple Lisa and Marc to create a family home for their two children, with a special focus on creating a calm environment for their child Liam who has autism.

However, when deciding on a kitchen to fit into their home's aesthetic, the pair ran into trouble.

Dermot brought the couple to see a unique and quirky kitchen in a home in Rathmines, but viewers were left less than impressed with the cabinets' colour and style.

Taking to Twitter, people made their opinions clear.

One person said: "Sorry now - the house was gorgeous but the kitchen was absolutely red rotten. That lovely lady was trying to be diplomatic by saying it's lovely but not for her".

Another wrote: "sorry who owns the kitchen in rathmines , Dermot it not a nice kitchen at all!!"

While a third said: "I want it in my house.. but, I also want to burn it to the ground in equal measure".

A fourth wrote: "That kitchen looks like a lockdown DIY job gone wrong".

Others suggested that Dermot secretly brings couples to see strange kitchens just to provoke a reaction.

They said: "I think Dermo just brings us to those kitchens to get us to react. I don't think he even likes them himself."

While others joked about the architect's passion for presses.

"Dermot is one of the only people who gets got under collar about grain on a press…..and personally I'm all for it", one commented.

A second said: "Someone someday will agree with Dermots fetish with s*** Plywood kitchens".

"All the canteens on site with shelfs and presses in plywood were apparently the height of chic," a third said.

Another person praised the family for their positive attitude, saying: "I kind of love this family. They're staying so positive and still having a laugh through everything. And I agree about that plywood orange and blue kitchen…"
