RTE pundit Richie Sadlier launches defence of Celtic over pragmatism row

Richie Sadlier launched a defence of Celtic after being asked if they side should have been more pragmatic in their Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

The Glasgow outfit were well beaten by the current champions at Celtic Park with Carlo Ancelotti's side putting together a blistering second half performance.

Celtic did impress and were unlucky not to be leading going into the break but Madrid did show their class with goals from Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric and Eden Hazard.

And true to his values, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou had his side playing their typical high energy style.

Although they ultimately became undone, Richie Sadlier defended the side.

When asked if they should have been more pragmatic, he said: "I think this is the inevitable line of questioning people will come up with if they were to lose tonight to Real Madrid, particularly if they were to lose by more than a couple of goals.

"Going back to everything we said beforehand, Celtic are set up to play a particular way. The signings were made because they fit ito that way of playing and they are wildly successful at it.

"You're asking the question if they had been a little more conservative and less gung-ho going forward and put maybe more players in the back would it have changed?

"We'll show all the chances Celtic created and I don't think they could play any other system that would help them create even more chances.

"I think they lacked a cutting edge up front and didn't score a goal, they weren't clinical and have been really clinical domestically. Those are the margins at this level.

"You can be competing in a game against Real Madrid and there can be spells where you're on top and feel confident and have the better of them and then in no time at all you can be a goal or two down.

"I think Celtic will get a lot from that performance tonight.

"I don't think there is any shame at all in Celtic going out the way they did."
