RTE Prime Time viewers surprised by unusual report on Vladimir Putin

RTE viewers were surprised by one report on Prime Time last night.

Journalist Barry Cummins took a look at the latest developments in Ukraine and analyse Russian President Vladimir Putin's next step as the war reaches its third week.

However, it was not the content of the report which caused confusion among some viewers but rather the unusual way it was presented.

The segment was recounted exclusively through Irish, which is not the norm for the current affairs show.

Taking to social media, there were mixed opinions about the novel delivery, with some voicing confusion and others delighted to hear Irish spoken on RTE 1.

One person said: "Why is part of #rtept in Irish?"

A second wrote: "I felt it was unfair due to the subject matter. Wrong call tonight."

A third said: "#rtept as Gaeilge tonight, token bit of Irish for St Patrick’s Day."

While a fourth opined: "Agreed #Ukraine should not be part of token fallacy that Irish is a living language - This nation is being assaulted on a horrendous scale. #RtePT."

However, others were delighted to see Irish speakers being represented, particularly as it is Seachtain na Gaeilge until March 17.

One wrote: "Despite the devastating content about the illegal war in Ukraine, it's good to see a piece reported as #gaeilge on @RTE_PrimeTime #rtept."

The Ukraine crisis played a prominent role on Prime Time on Tuesday, with several guests discussing the situation on the ground and the overall outlook on the war.

There was also a segment on rising energy prices after Bord Gais became the latest supplier to announce a shock increase in bills that will see gas for their customers go up by a whopping 40% and electricity by 27%.
