RTE Prime Time viewers praise Miriam O'Callaghan after tough interview with Cork attack victim

Prime Time took an emotional trip to the southern capital on Tuesday evening, as host Miriam O'Callaghan spoke to one of the victims of the shocking Cork attack over the weekend

Brother and sister Gerry and Mary O'Halloran were targeted by a mask-wearing thug who entered Gerry's home on Boyce's Street, near Blarney Street on Sunday.

As CorkBeo reported at the time - Mary (83) was visiting her brother Gerry (79) and arrived at his small home to find a man with a knife demanding money.

The thug took a large sum of money from Mary before making off - both siblings were later helped by Gardai and an ambulance crew, who have set up a fundraising page to help them.

On Tuesday, Miriam visited Mary who explained that her brother remains in hospital.

""He's not doing too bad, still nervous. He was happy to see me. All we have is to help one another."

The community are rallying around the pair, with coal being delivered as the RTE cameras arrived at Mary's home, and a flower delivery also arriving as Miriam was there.

And viewers were full of support for the pair, with one twitter user saying: "Tired of hearing stories of elderly people getting attacked in their own homes. It's so sad."

A second added: "I had a Granny like Mary and I had a neighbour like Mary. My heart bleeds for her and her brother Gerry."

While a third fumed: "Imagine robbing and assaulting that woman. Shocking."

A Garda spokesperson said: "Shortly after 7.30am a man (70s) and woman (80s) were threatened at knifepoint by a male intruder in the course of a burglary at a house on Boyce’s Street.

"The intruder left the scene on foot with a sum of cash."

"Gardaí are appealing for information. They are keen to speak with anyone who was in the vicinity of Boyce’s Street or neighbouring streets between 6:30am and 9:00am who may have witnessed anything."
