RTE Prime Time viewers let thoughts be known after 'rude' Miriam O'Callaghan interview

Some RTE viewers were left disappointed by one interview on Thursday night's Prime Time.

Ireland's Commissioner for Financial Services to the EU Mairead McGuinness spoke to Miriam O'Callaghan on the programme about Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

It comes after 137 Ukrainian citizens and soldiers died on Thursday, according to the country's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

He described the full-scale assault on his nation by Russian troops as "a declaration of war on Europe" and added it felt like "a new iron curtain is falling" across the continent.

Ms McGuinness gave her assessment on the day's events following the news that the EU has agreed upon a new round of sanctions against Russia targeting a range of key sectors.

She believes sanctions will help to weaken the Russian economy and show Vladimir Putin he doesn't have the money to fight a war.

"I don't think any of us expected that Vladamir Putin would pull back because we announced sanctions," she told Prime Time.

"The reason we have to do this is because we have to cripple his economy, that's a lesson he has to understand and so that he won't have the money to fight a war.

"Secondly, don't take Europe in isolation, you forget that this is with the US, with Canada, the UK, Japan."

Many viewers were keen to hear what the Commissioner had to say, and some were left frustrated by Miriam O'Callaghan's "interruptions".

Taking to social media, one person said: "Jesus Miriam stop interrupting her. We want to hear what Mairead has to say. #rtept."

A second opined: "#rtept Miriam is quite rude, isn't she?"A third wrote:

A third said: "#rtept would Miriam just shut up and let Mairead Mc Guinness speak."

Someone else commented: "I really wish @MiriamOCal would stop interrupting. I really wanted to hear what @McGuinnessEU had to say. Very disappointed with prime time reporting at the moment."

While another added: "No point in inviting on a guest to hear what they have to say and then talk over them?"
