RTE Prime Time leaves people in tears as Irish man reunited with family that escaped Ukraine

RTE had a special report on the Ukraine crisis on Tuesday evening, with many viewers left applauding after one specific segment.

Regular presenter Fran McNulty had travelled to the Ukraine/Hungary border, where he was one of the witnesses to an important reunion.

Desmond O’Maonaigh, his partner Svitlana Slubina, and her 14-year-old son live in Kyiv, but Desmond had returned to Ireland to help with a family emergency when the invasion broke out.

He quickly made plans to get back to the border to help evacuate Svitland and her son, with the trio reuniting on Tuesday in emotional scenes.

"It's like nothing you could ever imagine. You could never imagine, you could never believe [that this could happen], and I still don't believe it", Svitlana told Fran.

Elsewhere, we heard the story of Ukrainian YouTuber Olena Gnes, who has been uploading daily clips from a bomb shelter alongside her three children, all aged seven and under including a newborn.

She signed off her video on Tuesday night with a haunting, if brave message.

"I'd like to say goodbye. No, I'm not going to die. I want to live. But we expect the mobile connection will be out and I will not have a chance to talk to you for some time," she said.

"Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite. Bye Bye."
