RTE presenter in hot water as he asks Derry Girls actress 'misogynistic' question

RTE presenter Ryan Tubridy got himself into hot water on Friday night's The Late Late Show after he asked actress Jamie-Lee O'Donnell her age.

The Derry Girls star plays outspoken teenager Michelle in the hit Channel 4 sitcom but in real life she recently turned 30 in March.

She was appearing on the show to chat to host Ryan Tubridy about the third and final series, how the show changed her life and the future.

The esteemed Derry-born actress is an audience favourite as Erin's best friend Michelle, with her infamous one-liners having viewers in stitches.

But during the interview Jamie-Lee quickly shut down The Late Late Show host saying the question about her age was 'misogynistic' and that he wouldn't have asked a male actor the same question.

The awkward line of questioning began as Tubridy said: "This may be a rude question and you don't have to answer but can I ask you how old you are?"

Jamie-Lee jokingly replied: "I'm 117 - and very, very wise."

"Good answer. Would you consider telling me what age you are?" said Tubridy.

"This is the thing about that, it gets on my nerves a wee bit," said Jamie-Lee.

Tubridy began to backtrack, saying: "Oh no, that's okay, I'll walk away from it if you'd like me to."

"Do you know what it is, it's always quite misogynistic even it's unintentionally misogynistic because men don't get the same scrutiny in their career," said Jamie-Lee.

Tubridy defended himself saying: "I would definitely have asked the male actor the same question because he's playing a teenager too."

Jamie-Lee replied: "You're saying that now, there's nobody here. I'll have to take your word for it."

Late Late viewers watching at home enjoyed the interaction with many praising Jamie-Lee for her reaction however, some viewers also defended Tubridy's question.
