RTE Late Late Toy Show star Saoirse Ruane's mother has issued an update following her major surgery to remove a tumour.

Saoirse, 10, from Kiltullagh in Galway, captured the hearts of the nation on The Late Late Toy Show in 2020 when she spoke about losing her leg to cancer.

Saoirse was diagnosed with cancer for a second time last month and underwent surgery in Crumlin Children's Hospital on her lung yesterday to remove a tumour .

"This is the first of many steps on this difficult journey."

Saoirse's mum added that she was "so happy and grateful to be sitting here beside her."

"We are so thankful to her surgeon and her amazing team here in Crumlin Hospital."

RTE presenter Ryan Tubridy wished Saoirse well ahead of her surgery yesterday.

He said: “She has a big day. Let’s fill those sails with hope and love.”

He gave Saoirse a gift of a guitar when she appeared on The Late Late Show last week and encouraged her to keep her positive attitude.

Saoírse first appeared on the Late Late Show in 2020 where she shared the story of how she lost her right leg to cancer and learned to walk on a new prosthetic leg.

She has since become a semi-regular guest on the show and helped launch Toy Show: The Musical on Friday.

Following the brave 10-year-old's appearance on The Late Late Show on Friday night, Saoirse's parents issued an update saying that her cancer had returned and after meeting with her medical team, confirming surgery would be needed to remove the tumour.
