Paul is also starring alongside English actress Emily Watson in psychological drama 'God's Creatures' which is about a scandal that rocks a small fishing community in Ireland. The film was shot in Ireland during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking about working alongside Emily, Paul described her as "the easiest person to fall in love with" and that they had a ball filming their scenes together for 'God's Creatures'. Emily added that prior to filming in Ireland they all talked on Zoom, and she joked that she had "no clue" what a GAA ball was until Paul explained it.
When asked about his Oscar nod and upcoming role in the new Gladiator sequel, Paul admitted that he initially thought producers offering him the role as a joke. He said: "It's mad, I initially thought it was a joke until I met the producers in LA a few months ago and did a Zoom call with Ridley Scott. It just happened very rapidly.
"I can't wait to get started," he added. The Maynooth man also chatted about his hilarious call with his family after he received his Oscar nomination for Aftersun, confirming that he will attend the awards ceremony with his mum and dad.
Both Paul and Emily praised Ireland for embracing the arts, and how it's been an "incredible" time for Irish film and tv. Paul said: "It's so important to celebrate the surge in Irish nominations but there's no reason we shouldn't keep pushing for more, we have the best writers and actors and directors, I think it's up to the government and powers that be to support it."
Emily added: "Ireland is an incredibly creative place, I feel I've been made incredibly welcome." When asked about his recent interview with TG4 as gaeilge at the BAFTAS, Paul said: “I’m very proud of the Irish that I have and I think that it’s very important to not gate-keep the language. Agus ya.”
