The Late Late Show returned to RTE last night with famous faces sitting down with Ryan Tubridy to discuss a range of topics.
Among them was the rising cost of living, which is a growing concern for many Irish households.
A panel of experts joined Ryan to talk about what to expect as we head into winter.
They also gave tips on how to cut costs and save money.
It was during this segment that many viewers realised they are making a huge energy bill mistake.
Journalist Conor Pope said households could save up to €1,000 every year just by switching energy provider.
Addressing the audience in the RTE studio, he asked them to raise their hands if they’re getting energy from the same supplier as last year. An estimated 60% did.
He then said: “Everybody that put up their hand is wasting money. You’re giving energy companies money for absolutely nothing.
“500,000 households have not switched, every single one of those households is wasting money. I’m not talking 50 quid, or 70 quid - they’re all wasting up to €1,000 a year.
“Because the way the business works is when you move from company A to company B, they give you a discount of up to 40% for the first 12 months. But if you don’t move after the 12 months, you go back up to paying the standard rate which is 40% higher.
“It’s not tricky to switch electricity or gas.”
Many people took to social media to praise him for the money-saving tip.
One person said: “The one crucial person on the LateLateShow was Conor Pope doing an audience poll to see who hasn’t changed their energy provider. SIXTY PERCENT! He himself saved €1,400. This must be done every year. I use bonkers. You need a few things before you start.”
Another added: “Great piece by them all tonight.”
A third claimed: “Your man Conor Pope is right about switching energy companies but the companies should make it easier for you to switch which they don't!!!!”
