A new contender has apparently emerged in the race to host the Late Late Show after a series of "interesting wagers" at a Dublin bookies led to one female RTE presenter having her odds slashed.
Angela Scanlon has been the subject of some significant bets, prompting BoyleSports to cut her odds from 33/1 to 9/2. She is now joint-second favourite for the job.
Ryan Tubridy shocked RTE bosses and TV viewers last week by announcing he was standing aside as the host at the end of the current series after 14 years at the helm. And on Friday night's show, he hinted at his replacement might be by wishing them luck, "whoever she may be," suggesting a female host is being lined up for the flagship show for the first time. Female presenters fill the first four slots in the betting market with current affairs presenter and Laois native Claire Byrne the clear favourite having been backed into 6/4 from 9/4.

Early favourite Miriam O’Callaghan has now drifted out to 9/2 in the betting having once been as short as 4/6 odds-on. Of the other female contenders, Prime Time presenter Sarah McInerney is now also 9/2 from 9/1 while the biggest mover of them all is Ask Me Anything presenter Angela Scanlon who was slashed to 9/2 (from 33/1) after a few interesting wagers were placed in a city centre shop.
A spokesman said: “It’s been a busy ever-changing market since we opened the betting last week and we’ve seen interest in quite a few different names, all female, with some surprising interest in Angela Scanlon, but Claire Byrne is by far the most fancied for the top job at Montrose.”
