RTE Kin star Yasmin Seky hails cast members for ‘nailing’ Dublin accent after backlash

RTE Kin star Yasmin Seky has heaped praise on her cast members for ‘nailing’ the inner city Dublin accent in the hit new crime show.

Despite no formal acting training, the 23-year-old Dubliner has found herself as a central character in Kin, as Nikita Murphy, the girlfriend of Eric ‘Viking’ Kinsella, played by Offaly-born star Sam Keeley.

And whilst the hotly anticipated new RTÉ crime drama stars acting heavyweights Aidan Gillen, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Emmett Scanlan, it’s her country co-star Keeley and Londoner Charlie Cox, who plays Mikie, that she’s most impressed by.

The Cabra native said: “The thing with Sam is that he is from the country and I’m from Cabra so personally I thought he nailed it.

“And we had so many people go ‘Where is Charlie from, he’s not Irish?’

“He did an amazing Dublin accent, and he was great to work with as well,” she told TV Now.

Her comments come after RTE’s Joe Duffy hit out at crime dramas like Love/Hate and Kin for ‘exploiting’ real people’s lives and having actors put on ‘thick Dublin accents’.

“I hate their travails being exploited by middle-class actors who are putting on their thick working-class Dublin accents and then go back to eating foie gras during their lunch break,” he told RTE Guide before the show hit screens earlier this month.

As a newcomer on the scene, Yasmin also praised her star studded cast, including Peaky Blinders favourite Gillen, and Kin’s creator and writer Peter McKenna for helping her feel comfortable during filming.

But the budding star, who is still working full-time at a bank, admitted she’s hopeful this is only the beginning of a fruitful career on screen.

“I’d love to continue on with it, absolutely.

“It’s really hard to tell what is going to come of it. I’ve had a number of auditions since and I’ve joined with an agent now so that’s great.

“I think it’s more how people react to the show as well,” she added.

Kin has already proved a huge hit, drawing in half a million viewers each week since it began.

And hinting at plenty more to come from her character in the gritty gangland drama, she added: “I don’t want to say too much but she’s not in danger - if anything she is going to be Eric’s voice of reason.

“The two of them definitely have a lot coming towards them though and as my mam said, they shouldn’t have lied.”
