RTE Kin season 2: Everything to know about from last season ahead of drama's return

The fictional Kinsella family burst onto our screens in RTE's gritty crime drama Kin just over a year ago, and now the hit show is back next week for a second season.

The latest season of Kin will show everyone's favourite, if slightly murderous, family at the top of their game after eliminating their enemy Eamon Cunningham (played by Ciaran Hinds), but now the Kinsellas will soon discover that killing him off may have created as many problems as it solved. In an explosive trailer released last week, it appears that the Kinsellas will come against an enemy more dangerous than Eamon, and where once there were unbreakable bonds of blood and family, now there is only suspicion, distrust and resentment.

But before the second season begins, we look back on what happened to the Kinsella clan in season 1 and where to watch the first episode of season 2 which is set to air on March 19. *Spoilers below!*

Who stars in Kin season 1 and what happens?

Kin first aired on RTE on 9 September 2021. The crime drama features an ensemble cast which includes; Aidan Gillen (as Frank Kinsella), Charlie Cox (as Michael Kinsella), Clare Dunne (as Amanda Kinsella), Emmett J. Scanlon (as Jimmy Kinsella), Sam Keely (as Eric 'Viking' Kinsella), Yasmin Seky (as Nikita Murphy), Maria Doyle Kennedy ( as Bridget 'Birdy' Goggins) and Ciaran Hinds (as Eamon Cunningham).

In the first episode of the show's debut season, we're thrust into the luxurious lifestyle of the Kinsella family as Michael (Charlie Cox) is released from prison after a number of years and is welcomed back into the family's fold with a big party. But things quickly escalate when the Kinsellas run foul of rival crime boss Eamon Cunningham's cronies in a drugs deal gone wrong, and Amanda and Jimmy's oldest son Jamie (played by Cian Fitzsimons) is tragically shot dead instead of Viking and Michael during a violent scuffle.

Distraught and enraged, the Kinsellas swear vengeance on Eamon's gang and so begins a devastating gangland feud that claims more than one innocent life, and ultimately results in the death of crime boss Eamon, the imprisonment of Viking and the rest of the family in uproar at the end of the season.

Kin is created, written and executive produced by Peter McKenna (Hidden Assets, Red Rock). The series is produced by Canadian company BRON Studios and British producers Headline Pictures in association with RTÉ.

Where and when can I watch season 2?

Season two is directed by Felix Thompson, directing duo Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, and Kate Dolan. Kin season 2's first episode will air on RTE One on Sunday, 19 March at 9.30pm, with new episodes airing weekly.

Eric Kinsella (Sam Keeley) heads to court in a teaser from Episode 1 (RTE Releases)

For those who want to catch up ahead of time, Kin season 1 will be available to stream once again from Sunday, 12 March on the RTE Player. In episode 1 of season 2, according to RTE we will see the Kinsellas thriving in the wake of rival gang leader Eamon Cunningham’s death. However, a new threat rears its head when members of a Turkish cartel inform the Kinsellas that Eamon owed them sizable debt – and since the Kinsellas killed Eamon, the debt is now theirs to pay back.

Kin airs on RTE One on March 19 at 9:30pm.
