RTE GAA host Des Cahill's son nearly cancelled his wedding because it clashed with the All-Ireland

Des Cahill's son Paul nearly cancelled his wedding because it clashed with the All-Ireland final, the RTÉ sports broadcaster revealed.

Paul tied the knot with his longtime love Aine in September last year, but the couple were devastated when the date ended up being the same as the Croke Park clash between Mayo and Tyrone, reports RSVP Live.

The Sunday Game host Des ended up missing his first All-Ireland since 1972, but he said it was absolutely worth it.

He told RSVP Magazine: "That was a disaster because Paul went to such lengths to pick a wedding date that would not clash with the ladies or men’s finals and Tyrone were given an extra two weeks and then they wanted another week.

"Paul and Aine, his wife, were going to cancel the wedding and I said no.

"My biggest concern was, it was Mayo and Tyrone in the final, and if Mayo had won, which I thought they would, everyone would have left to watch Mayo’s celebrations.

"Paul was originally going to get a big screen into the wedding in Killiney Castle. But one of my sisters-in-law had been at a wedding where they had a big screen for a match and said it was just like being in a pub, no-one talking, just watching the match.

"Some people had it on their phones but when Tyrone pulled away, they didn’t care as much about seeing them celebrating."

Paul and Aine were forced to postpone their nuptials, which were originally meant to take place in September 2020, due to Covid restrictions that limited guest numbers to 25.

The decision was tough for everyone, especially Des who said it would have been the first time he was off work around that time of year.

However he said the wedding ended up being an "unbelievable" day and he loved every minute of it.
