RSB announce major change to millions of customer bank cards

Huge changes are set to come for millions of Royal Bank of Scotland account holders this year.

Many RSB customers received an email from the bank this week stating that their Visa debit card will soon be replaced with a new Mastercard. It comes as Natwest follows in the footsteps of Santander and First Direct.

However, despite the change, staff reassured customers that nothing will change with their accounts and the bank card will work in exactly the same way. But they announced the change to "keep things fresh" as they believe it allows them to "offer a better overall service" to customers, GlasgowLive reports.

The bank wrote: "We'll be launching the new cards this year and will let you know closer to the time when you can expect to receive yours through your letterbox. Your old Visa card will stop working soon so take a look at how to get your new Debit Mastercard card up and running. We won't contact you to request any personal details, so any requests you get could be a scam."

Customers will also be able to design their new card with a "brand new look". More information can be found online here.

When your new Mastercard arrives, RSB has complied a list of what customers should do next:

  1. Chop up your old Visa card
  2. Pay once with your pin or withdraw cash - which will be the same pin number you held before. After this you can use contactless
  3. Make sure to check all details are up to date

How will my new card work?

The new card will work the same and your pin number will not change. Refunds also work the same way. According to RSB, your Debit Mastercard will be accepted almost anywhere that accepts card payments, either in store or online. It's not just limited to the UK either.

RSB said the new perks include the Priceless® experiences.

Red flags to watch out for

RSB said the bank will never ask for your pin, password or card reader code so urge people to never reveal that information. If somebody is asking you to do any of these things, it’s a scam. You can report suspicious emails to phishing@rbs.co.uk and texts to 8835.
