Royals at Cannes over the years, from Princess Diana to Grace Kelly

Cannes Film Festival began in 1946 and in that time has seen old school movie stars like Brigitte Bardot through to modern day A-listers like Margot Robbie and Leonardo DiCaprio sweep across its famous red carpets.

Not even royalty could resist the allure of the glamorous festivities, with everyone from Princess Diana to Queen Rania of Jordan paying a visit to Cannes.

The Monegasque royal family in particular has strong ties to the event - and not just because they're locals. Grace Kelly famously met her future husband Prince Rainier of Monaco there in 1955. in the year's since, Kelly's children and grandchildren have also become regular fixtures at the event.

In another photo taken the same year, Kelly took part in a quintessential Cannes photo op as she reclined on a boat at the festival - an early version of the superyacht selfies now taken by models and actresses who descend on the event today.

The British Royal Family has also been known to occasionally attend Cannes Film Festival - one of the earliest to do so was Princess Margaret, who attended with her husband Tony Armstrong Jones in 1966.

Princess Margaret wasn't the only royal to attend Cannes in 1966, as Grace Kelly also made an appearance in a suitably glamorous get-up.

Princess Grace attended Cannes again in 1968 and was the picture of vintage Hollywood glamour, wearing white evening gloves as well as an embroidered coat and purse.

Grace Kelly might have been Queen of Cannes for decades running, but her eldest daughter Princess Caroline of Monaco then became a fixture at the event - channelling a more relaxed look in a bandanna, collared shirt and oversized sunglasses.

In one of her most iconic appearances, Princess Diana stole the red carpet spotlight in a sky blue dress by one of her favourite designers: Catherine Walker. Complete with a matching scarf knotted and worn backwards, the dress was later auctioned off for charity in 2013 for £81,000.

Princess Diana also stepped out a Cannes the same year in this adventurous ensemble, which combined a structured double breasted blazer with a striped ruffled mini dress.

On Sunday, Casiraghi returned to Cannes Film Festival for the screening of Lux Aeterna. Rather than opting for the gowns and delicate cocktail dresses she has prevoiusly worn, she chose a striking star-print mini dress with heels.
