A woman in her 80s is in a critical condition after reportedly being hit by a police motorcycle that was part of a royal motorcade escorting Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh.
The Metropolitan Police said that at around 3.21pm on Wednesday a police motorcycle collided with the pedestrian at the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road, SW5, while on escort duties. Photos from the scene show a Special Escort Group police bike - which are often used by 'outriders' escorting royals - inside a police cordon. There are no reports of other injuries.
Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended the scene, and the woman was taken to hospital. She remains in a critical condition and her family have been informed. No other injuries were reported. Inquiries into the crash are ongoing and road closures remain in place.
The force said the Directorate of Professional Standards, which investigates officers’ conduct, has been informed as is routine.
Buckingham Palace has said that the Duchess of Edinburgh's "thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family", adding she was grateful for the "swift response"' of emergency services, reports the MailOnline.
The Duchess, 58, attended the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on Saturday alongside her husband Edward, the Duchess of Edinburgh. The couple helped host a garden party at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, alongside the Prince and Princess of Wales.
