Royal Navy v French Navy rugby match erupted into violent battle

A violent brawl between the British Royal Navy and French Navy has become one of rugby's most viewed videos.

The Royal Navy and 'Marine Nationale' take each other on annually, and the fixture is nicknamed 'Le Crunch'. This particular meeting has been dubbed as 'The Battle of Toulon', as two red cards were dished out amid chaotic scenes.

The incident has resurfaced on Tik Tok, and with over 160,000 views in les than 24 hours it has become one of rugby's most watched in the last day. The British are in a grey strip and the French in blue.

The video shows a blur of bodies laying into each other, with the sound of punches connecting heard on the footage. As things appear to be cooling off, several smaller fights kick off between players as coaches scramble to control them.

A Royal Navy spokesperson explained it was unclear what initiated the violence. The match actually continued afterwards, and players even "socialised after the game" according to the spokesperson.

The British Royal Navy said that there was "no place in the game" for the violence that ensued.

"Regrettably, the match will be remembered for a brawl in which both teams lost their self control. This type of behaviour has no place in the game," they wrote in their match report.

The French Navy went on to win the Babcock International Trophy with a 28-6 victory, and both teams had a picture together after the match. Players who were knocking lumps out of each other earlier in the game were arm-in-arm and smiling after 80 minutes.
