Royal Mint shares King Charles joke and people have 'no idea' what it means

The Royal Mint has shared a festive riddle on social media that has left users scratching their heads.

Getting into the Christmas spirit, the coinage manufacturer tweeted: "You've heard of elf on the shelf. Now get ready for..." The message was accompanied by an image of a UK one pence coin featuring the portrait of King Charles III.

The iconic Elf on the Shelf has become a Christmas staple in homes across the world. The festive tradition refers to the well loved children's book of the same title which tells a rhyming story of how Santa figures out who's naughty or nice with help from one of his elfin workers.

Since its publication in 2005, the loveable elf has evolved into a seasonal phenomenon, with toys of the character surging in popularity which are hidden in random places throughout homes and workplaces.

The tweet has left users baffled and many have chipped in their thoughts on what the festive riddle could mean.

Journalist Gavin Reily posited: "Chuck on a Buck?", while writer Adam Key guessed: "King on a thing?"

One user suggested: "Sovereign on a sovereign?" whilst another guessed: "Whopper on a copper". Another chimed in to say: "King on some bling."

Perhaps scraping the bottom of the solutions barrel, another person piped in with: "A king on some kerching?"

While the suggestions have poured in, it seems that everyone is sharing the same confusion at the Royal Mint's riddle.

A frustrated commenter asked: "What on earth is this meant to be?"

Glad to not be alone, one user commented: "Phew, I’m glad I’m not the only one not getting it!"

Not holding back, another asked: "Are you going for King on a Coin? Because that doesn’t rhyme but it’s the closest possible thing I can think of."
