Royal Mint's rarest 50p coins worth hundreds as people urged to check loose change

People have been urged to check their coin collection after the Royal Mint listed the rarest 50p pieces in circulation, with some worth hundreds.

The most valuable of 50p coins is the Kew Gardens edition, worth £650. There are 200 million 50ps circulating in the UK alone. The lower the mintage figure, the less coins that are in circulation, making them rarer and more valuable.

Most of the rare 50ps in question were minted to commemorate a notable occasion in culture, sport or history. The Kew Gardens coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since the famous gardens opened in 1759.

Other rare coins include a Harry Potter and the triathlon version, which marked the beginning of the 2012 Olympic games in London. Certain coins are highly sought after by avid collectors and can be sold online for a hefty amount, so it's worth checking your spare change to see if you have any lying about.

As reported by the Mirror, here are the Royal Mint's top five most valuable 50p coins, ranked from lowest to highest price they are being sold for on auction site eBay.
