Royal Aclaim to target the Nunthorpe after impressive win at York

Royal Aclaim rocketed to the top of the betting for the Nunthorpe Stakes at York next month after taking the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes at the Knavesmire.

The unbeaten daughter of Aclaim came home an effortless winner in the hands of Andrea Atzeni and is now 5-1 with Paddy Power for her return visit to the track.

Winning trainer James Tate could not conceal his delight, remarking: “We spend all our lives looking for something a bit special and I knew I had it after she won at Newcastle last year, beating Perfect Power.

“She did a piece of work getting ready for last year’s Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought, ‘oh my god. This is it’.

“Unfortunately, she’d had a setback and couldn’t reappear until this year, but she’s been worth waiting for.”

As for the future, Tate added: “Nunthorpe! Nunthorpe, Nunthorpe, Nunthorpe. We’ve no idea how good she is, but I’m looking forward to finding out.”

Owen Burrows had Anmaat ready after 287 absence when taking the John Smith’s Cup under Kevin Stott.

Connections of Chindit are eying another crack at Baaeed after the colt took the Summer Mile at Ascot.

Chindit, trained by Richard Hannon and partnered by Pat Dobbs, faces a mighty ask as he has twice been pummelled by Baaeed.
