Former Rangers coach Roy Makaay has been handed a major role with Bayern Munich as he gets set to lead the third edition of their 'World Squad.'
Makaay was part of Gio van Bronckhorst's coaching team at Ibrox but left when his countryman was sacked back in November. He spent a year there after Van Bronckhorst made him one of his first appointments and was in the dugout for their run to the Europa League final. It wasn't the end to his Ibrox spell Makaay would have imagined but he's not waited long to bounce back.
Makaay scored 102 goals in 178 games for the German giants as a player between 2003-07 and they have brought him back to lead their World Squad. It's an initiative that will see Bayern recruit Under-19 talent from around the world and pit them against their Under-19s, with the aim of promoting "diversity, tolerance and cohesion."
On his appointment, Makaay said: "I’m looking forward to this unique challenge of working with young players from all over the world and different cultures. We want to get the best out of every player in this elite football project and offer them the best possible platform at FC Bayern to get closer to their dream of being a professional footballer.”
