Roy Keane slams ‘terrible’ England as pundits left underwhelmed by World Cup 2022 draw with USA

England’s performance against the USA was dismantled as “terrible” by Roy Keane after Friday night’s World Cup draw.

Although the Three Lions players painted a positive picture of their stalemate in Al Khor, Keane, Ian Wright and Gary Neville were left thoroughly unimpressed.

“England did look leggy, they looked low on pace, short of ideas - even set-pieces you never felt they had a goal in their locker,” Keane told ITV.

“Actually, a terrible performance.”

Neville was disappointed not to see Phil Foden off the bench, although Gareth Southgate explained his reasons for leaving the Manchester City star on the bench after the full-time whistle.

“It was poor, we’re all disappointed,” he added. “I think we all wanted a lot more from England.

“Clean sheet is a positive but sometimes our midfield didn’t click tonight, we looked tired at times. I didn’t feel we connected in combinations in midfield, their midfield was far better.”

Former England striker Wright said: “We have to give United States a lot of credit for the way they defended, their midfield was very good, the only thing thing they lack is a real threat up front.

“From our point of view, the 6-2 [vs Iran] made us all think, ‘Wow’. But it didn’t happen [tonight]. It’s the same as the Euros, we started well then didn’t do so well against Scotland.

“You look at Harry Kane’s interview, he doesn’t seem too fussed about it. He’s happy about he point, I am too. But the fact is: they know what to do from here.”
