Roy Keane singles out Marcus Rashford after Man Utd game he didn't even play in

Marcus Rashford came in for criticism from Roy Keane after Manchester United's Premier League victory over Brentford, despite the England forward not featuring in the game.

Rashford was an unused substitute for the 3-0 win, which came courtesy of Bruno Fernandes ' opener, a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty and Raphael Varane's first goal for the club. Edinson Cavani came on in a late attacking change, but Rashford remained on the bench.

Former United captain Keane was in the studio for Sky Sports' Monday Night Football coverage, running the rule over his old club. While United put in one of their better recent performances in Ralf Rangnick's final home game in charge, the Irishman still took aim at United's number 10.

"He seems short on confidence," Keane said of the 24-year-old. "I go back, I think he’s taken his eye off the ball, with all his off the field stuff.

"He’s got that experience, but he doesn't mix his game. Even when he’s playing through the middle, I said he plays like a child [against Liverpool ].

"It’s like he’s not learnt from the game. I think he’s lost the eye of the tiger and he’s struggling to get it back. I think the hunger, he’s got to get the hunger back and make runs like Elanga tonight. Rashford has lost that hunger which is huge for a player."

Rashford is understood to be intent on winning back his starting place at United despite a difficult season. He has scored just five goals for United since returning from injury in October, with the last of those goals coming in January.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag is expected to give the England international a chance to resurrect his club career. The Dutch boss is set to take over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick ahead of the 2022-23 season.

With Rashford on the fringes, Rangnick has often preferred to use Anthony Elanga in a wide attacking role. The youngster earned an assist for Fernandes' goal, and was praised by the interim boss after the win.

Rangnick also suggested there will be plenty of upheaval over the summer. A number of United players are out of contract, including Paul Pogba and Juan Mata, while there could also be some sales.

"So far we haven't been able to speak," Rangnick said when quizzed on his conversations with Ten Hag. "Erik's focus is on winning the Dutch league, our focus was on our games.

"It's obvious quite a few players will leave and there is a need for top-quality players. I strongly believe that if everyone works together we can bring Man Utd back to where we need to be."
