Roy Keane looks set to get his Manchester United wish with the club reportedly ready to give youngster James Garner a chance in the first-team.
The Red Devils are set to overhaul their squad over the course of the summer transfer window. They have endured a dreadful season this term, again failing to win a trophy and appearing unlikely to qualify for next year's Champions League.
As well as utilising the transfer market, United could also look to promote from within their academy. One of the leading candidates to earn a spot within the first-team squad is Garner, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, reports The Daily Star.
Garner has impressed at the City Ground, making 37 appearances in all competitions. He has helped Steve Cooper's men to rise into play-off contention and also starred in the FA Cup win over Arsenal in January.
Those performances earned the praise of Keane head of Forest's clash with Liverpool later in that competition.
The Cork native told ITV Sport: "He [Garner] has got a good partnership with [Ryan] Yates going in the middle of midfield, I think they complement each other very well.
"He is very good technically and he likes to dictate the play, sits a little bit more than Yates. Tough game for him today, but this game is good for those young players to experience playing against these top players like Liverpool, it is a great way to learn."
Keane is now set to get his wish to see Garner make the step up at United, with the Daily Telegraph reporting he will be 'given the chance to impress' the Red Devils' new manager.
United will appoint a new boss in the summer, with Garner expected to be part of the first-team group at least at the start of pre-season.
It is stated that the midfielder has been 'earmarked' as a player with the potential to star for the senior team. Having been sent on loan in both of the last two seasons, United are said to be ready to assess him at 'close quarters'.
Garner may still end up being sent out on the fourth loan spell of his career after starting the summer at United. But with Paul Pogba out of contract, the Red Devils will be on the search for a new midfielder, a role Garner could certainly fill.
