Roy Keane sends message to Dele Alli over potential Newcastle United move

Roy Keane has told Dele Alli to make a fresh start in his stagnating career - and suggested a move to Newcastle United would be ideal.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has struggled to recapture that form that lead Spurs to the Champions League final, struggling for game time under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and more recently, Antonio Conte.

Newcastle are being linked with a loan move for the Spurs midfielder on a deal until the end of the season after he sat out of Tottenham's defeat against Chelsea.

The 25-year-old has lost his place in the international set-up and was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro2020.

With the World Cup later this year, Alli is being touted for a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to restart his career.

And Keane, speaking on Sky Sports' coverage of Tottenham's defeat to Chelsea, urged Alli to leave Spurs, with Newcastle a potential destination.

"I think the kid's lost the eye of the tiger," said Keane of Alli. "Sometimes you have to let the kid go, that's the nature of football.

"You've done your time here, you've lost your way - be good to the kid. He's been a good signing - they paid £5m for him - let the kid go."

When asked where Alli could move to, Keane replied: "Newcastle? Get his career going up there, the fans would love him."

Meanwhile, former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips believes Alli would be an "amazing signing" for Newcastle.

The newly-appointed South Shields manager was quick to remind Magpies supporters that Alli was once regarded as one of the best players in the Premier League three years ago.

“If Howe can get the best out of him then he would be an amazing signing," Phillips told Football Insider. "But there’s question marks.

“They would need him to prove his fitness and be consistent. The Dele Alli of three years ago was one of the best players in the Premier League. I question whether they would get that version of Dele Alli.

“I have always said that he needs to leave Tottenham. He needs a fresh challenge. A fresh start. Perhaps Newcastle is a place where he could get that.

“Maybe they could get the best out of him. It could be a great signing but I’d be cautious. Newcastle need a player who is going to dig in and fight.”
