Roy Keane's most furious and infamous David de Gea rants as goalkeeper leaves Man Utd

It's fair to say that Roy Keane has never been a huge fan of David de Gea.

The now former Manchester United goalkeeper has drawn the ire of the Sky Sports pundit and fellow United legend on many occasions.

While De Gea has turned in some sensational performances for the Red Devils since joining the club in 2011, Keane has never been sold.

The fact that the Spaniard has had his fair share of forgettable moments added credence to Keane's belief that the shot-stopper simply wasn't up to the standard required to be Manchester United's keeper.

After over a decade at the club, De Gea, the last player to win a Premier League title with United, is gone and Keane will have to direct his scrutiny towards a new goalkeeper in the forthcoming season.

Now that the dust has settled on De Gea's future, the time is right to look back at some of Roy Keane's most scathing and infamous remarks about David De Gea in recent years.

That's his job!

Despite criticism, De Gea picked up the golden glove award for keeping the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

On the day of his presentation, the 32-year-old pulled off a penalty save from Aleksandar Mitrovic as United beat Fulham 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Even with the penalty save, Keane took the opportunity to urge United to look for a new keeper.

"De Gea, they're patting him on the back there.

"I'd move him on quickly, he's not for me, he's not going to get Man United back winning trophies, absolutely not. This idea of everybody patting him on the head, it's just ridiculous. That's his job."

He looks like he's had a few drinks

Back in January, De Gea was in Keane's crosshairs after making a mistake that led to an Everton goal in the FA Cup third round tie between the sides at Old Trafford.

The former Atletico Madrid man certainly didn't cover himself in glory, and Keane took that opportunity to slam the goalkeeper.

"It's a shocking mistake from an international goalkeeper.

"De Gea there is like Carry On football. He looks like he's had a few drinks. It's a shocking mistake.

"It's almost like a 'keeper has been sent off and an outfield player has gone in goal and he doesn't know what to do. It's a horrendous mistake."

What chance have you got?

When the Manchester Derby rolled around in November 2021, Ole Gunner Solskjaer's reign in charge of Manchester United was coming to an end.

A deflating 2-0 defeat at home to their nearest rivals emphasised the gulf in class between the two sides and left the Norwegian on the brink.

Ole was gone following a 4-1 defeat to Watford a fortnight later, but the Derby was the defeat that really ramped up the pressure.

De Gea didn't have his best day at the office in that game, and Keane singled him out for criticism after the game.

"Look at Shaw and De Gea. What chance have you got in this game?

“I’ve been cross with these fellas for years. I give up on these players. They are international footballers! I can't understand the defending...I'm driving down here thinking 'I wonder if Man United have got a chance, they're at home'.”

Arrogance

There's something about De Gea and Everton.

His FA Cup howler this January has already been covered, but the goalkeeper has struggled on numerous occasions against the blue half of Mersyside in the past.

Back in 2020, De Gea inexplicably allowed himself to be charged down by Dominic Calvert Lewin resulting in a goal for Everton. At half-time of that game, Keane said "As a manager or player I'd kill him! You'd kill him!

"He's a goalkeeper being too clever. He just takes too long. What is he waiting for?!

"If you're going to make a decision at least do it quickly. These are huge moments for United in terms of trying to get into the top four, and you've got your experienced goalkeeper... what is he waiting for?!

"I think there's almost a bit of arrogance to it, 'look at me...'. I would have lynched him at half-time. I'd have no time for that carry on."

Bravery

Another Everton game, another De Gea clanger.

And also another scathing criticism from Keane.

De Gea was at fault in early 2021 as Everton salvaged a draw with the last kick of the game off the back of an aimless hoof into the box. "Particularly with the position they are in, they’ve got goals in their team but again defensively, particularly the goalkeeper, I’m certainly not his biggest fan.

"Two goals last night, the one thing you want from your goalkeeper is courage and he didn’t show that for the equalising goal. Not a good sign."

Swinging punches

The most famous Keane rant on De Gea.

It was the first game back from lockdown and United headed to Spurs in need of a win to boost their top-four hopes.

De Gea conceded a soft goal in the first-half, and when we went to the studio at the interval, Keane pulled no punches.

"And I am sick to death of this goalkeeper,” he said. “I would be flying in at half time. I would be swinging punches at that guy.

"This is a standard save for a standard, international goalkeeper. I am flabbergasted. There's got to be some stuff going on at half-time.”

He added: "Maguire and De Gea, I wouldn't even let them on the bus after the game. Get a taxi back to Manchester."
